China and the Maldives share a long history of friendly exchanges. Across the blue waters of the Indian Ocean, our two peoples established close ties through the ancient Maritime Silk Road. Ancient Chinese porcelain and coins unearthed in Malé, now on display at the National Museum of the Maldives, bear witness to this enduring friendship.

For more than half a century since the establishment of diplomatic relations, our two countries have always respected and supported each other, setting a good example of equal treatment, mutual assistance, and mutual benefit between countries of different sizes. In September 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a historic state visit to the Maldives, during which both sides agreed to establish a future-oriented comprehensive friendly cooperative partnership. Just a few months later, in December 2014, the Maldives became one of the first countries to join the Belt and Road Initiative. In January 2024, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu paid a state visit to China, during which the two heads of state jointly announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and committed to building a China-Maldives community with a shared future, charting a new vision for the development of bilateral ties.

From the ancient Maritime Silk Road to modern Belt and Road cooperation, the friendship between China and the Maldives has flourished. In recent years, our relations have continued to deepen, with fruitful outcomes across various sectors under the BRI. The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, spanning the waves, has become a symbol of our shared aspirations and a vivid landmark of our partnership in the new era. China remains the largest source of tourists to the Maldives, and the Maldives is the top South Asian destination for Chinese travelers. The China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which came into effect this year, will further promote economic and trade relations between our two countries. When hearts are connected, even mountains and seas can be overcome. China is ready to work hand in hand with the Maldives to broaden exchanges and deepen cooperation across all fields. Together, let us bring tangible benefits to our peoples and build a China-Maldives community with a shared future.
