On 15 September 2014, during the state visit to Maldives by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the nameplate of the Laamu Link Road Project was unveiled.

On 15 December 2014, the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Laamu Link Road Project was held. The road, connecting 4 islands from the atoll with a length of 14.9 kilometers, was believed to facilitate the travel of people in Laamu Atoll of Maldives.

On 10 October 2016, after hard work of nearly two years, the construction of the Laamu Link Road Project was completed and handed over to Maldivian government.

In January 2022, the successful official visit of Chinese State Councilor and FM Wang Yi to Maldives has started a new journey in China-Maldives relations. China will always support Maldives in accelerating economic and social development.
